Solve this for x
x² = 36
Step 1 — Get x² on its ownIt already is: x² = 36
Step 2 — Take the square root of both sidesx = ±√36
Step 3 — Work out the root (both signs!)x = 6 or x = −6
x = ±
When x is squared on its own, you undo the square with a square root — and because both a positive and a negative number square to the same thing, you write ±. So x² = k gives x = ±√k. Here you only need the size of the root; the ± gives you the two answers.
