You've met the three appeals — ethos, pathos, logos — the toolkit for moving a crowd. This concept zooms out to the thing underneath: authority. Not the appeals you reach for, but the right to make the claim in the first place. When someone speaks, your gut quietly asks a question before it weighs a single fact: should I trust this person on this?

Authority Is Earned, Not Announced

A title gets you the microphone; it doesn't get you the room. Real authority — the kind that makes people actually lean in — is built from a few honest things. Expertise: you genuinely know this topic, and it's checkable. Honesty: you've a track record of telling it straight, and you own it when you're wrong. Lived experience: you've actually been through the thing you're describing. And a stake: it touches your life too, so you're not just talking for the sake of it.

Stack a few of those and people listen before you've made your case. Turn up with none of them and even a perfect argument struggles to land — because nobody's decided you're worth hearing yet.

Say it plainly: authority = earned trust + standing + the right to make this claim. You build it; you can't just claim it.

And It's Tied to the Topic

Here's the part people forget. Authority doesn't travel. A brilliant climate scientist has enormous standing on emissions and almost none on how to grill a steak. A champion footballer's word means everything about training and nothing about tax law. Flick the topic in the toy and watch the same speaker's meter swing — because the question is never just "is she credible?" but "is she credible on this?"

This is also why lived experience can outrank a degree. Nobody has more standing to talk about losing a parent than someone who just has — no qualification beats having stood there. Authority is whatever genuinely earns you the right to speak on this exact thing.

Why It Matters Before You Argue a Word

Get this and two things change. You'll build your own credibility on purpose — leading with the experience or evidence that earns you a hearing — and you'll spot when someone's borrowing authority they haven't earned (the rung-3 trap). Earn the right to be heard first; then the argument you build has somewhere to land.
